Aladdin The Musical

A few weeks ago I was invited along to the Perth Opening Night of Aladdin The Musical at Crown Casino and boy oh boy was I blown away. I love the theatre and I always go in with such high expectations (not always the best thing to do). This show absolutely blew me away! Let me tell you why…

The show was absolutely spectacular! From the moment the curtin rose it was almost like you entered Agrabah. The set is stunning with so much focus on the small details as well as the large so no matter where you are sitting in the audience you get the most amazing view. The costumes are phenomenal and the singing is perfection. I honestly can’t explain to you how much I loved this show. It truly blew me away! Without giving too much away I thought I would do a little write up on my favourite parts of the performance in case you’re thinking of going and you wanted some more info!

One of my favourite sets of the show was the market place. It reminded me just of the market place in the movie and was absolutely breathtaking. The way the marketplace shifted and changed into the roof top blew me away. The props are so multidimensional its fantastic and there is just colour and life bursting out of the scenes! Another one of my favourite sets was the Cave of Wonders. This cave was absolutely dazzling and the numbers performed in the cave were amazing! With a total of 108 changes happening in under a minute and 58 happening in less than 30 seconds you were always kept on your toes as something new was always popping out! The magic carpet scene was just something else entirely. The singing was amazing and the carpet flew around the stage so effortlessly it didn’t seem like it was attached to anything at all! I also loved the performance of the song ‘Prince Ali’ – it was action packed and just so much fun. Those four scenes were what really stood out for me as they were my favourite parts of the movie growing up, but the entire show was just perfection and I am dying to go again!

The actors in this show were nothing short of pure talent! While my favourite character was Genie (I love a good laugh), Aladdin, Jasmin, Jafar and the Sultan are amazing. The whole cast in fact is great!

Some fun facts about the original movie and the theatre production

The Disney film was released in 1993 and was the number one movie that year grossing over $550 million ($1 billion in todays money). The music from the movie went on to win Grammy Awards, Academy Awards as well as Golden Globes. So you can see why creating a stage show after this much loved movie would’ve been difficult. The stage production has been given critical acclaim for its absolute genius and perfection when encapsulating the story.

One of my favourite things about the show were the phenomenal costumes. 337 costumes were used in the show along with 161 pairs of shoes. The costumes use a total of 1225 different fabrics and 712 different kinds of beads with a single pair of men’s pants in the finale featuring 1428 Swarovski crystals. So needless to say these are absolutely breathtaking pieces.

I would recommend this show in a heart beat as I am pretty sure you can tell I loved it! Its currently in Perth so head down to the Crown, make a night of it with your girlfriends, partner or family (if you have older kids) and enjoy!

Xoxo, Angie
